Riviera Maya Remote Work Office Pods From REMO

For a hybrid trip that’s not completely a vacation or completely work, the REMO remote work office pods located in an all-inclusive hotel in the Riviera Maya are a dream come true.

As many people discovered when they suddenly had to work at home every day during lockdowns, many houses and apartments made for comfortable living aren’t so ideal as productive work spaces. While few people seem to be in any hurry to return to typical office cubicles, an actual office with a desk, ergonomic chair, and a closed door can lead to much better concentration and better video meetings.

The best ideas tend to come out of solving frustrations and that was the case for REMO‘s head designer, Tom Wallace, who was working from a dining room table with his wife during the pandemic, without a good place to do phone calls. He and the company founders worked on work pods that could be installed in existing spaces to provide a quiet, isolated office location.

Unfortunately, the company is based in Ukraine and plans to build out there beyond the first location stopped after the Russian invasion. Their first in this part of the world though is near Puerto Morelos, not far from Cancun, on a fourth-floor terrace of Sensira Resort & Spa, a great family beachfront hotel with multiple swimming pools, restaurants, and bars.

Sensira Resort and Spa all-inclusive

I wish I’d had this remote office pods setup available when my daughter was young because the resort is a fantastic playground for kids and teens, with more things to do than I’ve seen in nearly any other Mexican resort–and that’s saying a lot. For starters, there’s a playground pool, a movie theater, a disco, a large game room with billiards and ping-pong, a zipline, mini golf, and a kids’ club.

So while the kids are off doing their thing, Mom or Dad can keep the bills paid by retreating to their REMO pod for a few hours and doing whatever they need to do. So maybe a quick three-day getaway can be a week-long vacation instead: no need to be unavailable if there’s a deal to be closed, a deadline to meet, or a media appearance to take care of over Zoom.

The individual REMO pods are on the back side of the building, facing the Yucatan Peninsula jungle. I was kind of glad about that because it’s a calming view that also doesn’t make you wish you were doing something else like a beach view would. The Knoll ergonomic work chair is terrific, the desk is at a good height (it’s adjustable if not), and there are two monitor options. You can either get a Zoom monitor for meetings or a regular computer monitor to hook your laptop up to for a bigger screen.

Then there’s the lounge chair and footstool you see above in case you want to take a break with one of the books provided or enjoy a siesta to recharge. Staffers supply coffee, tea, sodas, and snacks. If you’re a guest of the hotel, which is all-inclusive, room service will provide you with anything else you want. I had an excellent charcuterie platter show up one afternoon and plowed through what I had to get done instead of leaving and coming back.

There’s also a larger pod available if there are several of you. It has some individual desks and then a conference-room-type table for collaboration. In all cases you’re looking out at a nice view through mirrored glass: you can see out, but nobody can see in. If the weather isn’t too sweltering, you can enjoy an outdoor lounge between the pods to get some sun on your skin.

The units lock and there’s a passcode if you want to depart for a break but leave your computers inside. You set the A/C temperature to your liking and there’s a music system if you work better with tunes on. Otherwise, these are very quiet spaces where it’s easy to concentrate.

Also, you’re assured of having some of the fastest internet speeds on this coast. It’s fast enough through the resort WiFi for most tasks, but when I did speed tests on the REMO remote work pods’ system I usually got close to 200 mbps both up and down. That’s about 4X faster than I have in my home office.

Service is good along the way, with a concierge in touch by Whatsapp and e-mail to check in on you and make sure you have what you need. You can rent the REMO office pods as an add-on to your stay at Sensira Resort, or you can stay elsewhere and pop in here for a day or two from one of the other Riviera Maya resorts and have a better workspace than you will there.
