Food insecurity escalates in South Africa; women and children disproportionately impacted

As South Africa’s food crisis deepens, the vulnerable suffer the most, particularly mothers and their children. This growing emergency is not just a statistic; it’s a harsh reality that sees hunger relentlessly claiming more victims.

South African Harvest said that each year, over 15 000 children are diagnosed with severe malnutrition, a debilitating condition that is also linked to approximately 1 000 deaths annually.
